2. Both scenarios would be fine! Players not wanting to have their characters fight the monster could run from the ballroom; they would be safe in any room with a pumpkin decorating it. The shadows could also chase characters to other parts of the hotel and have a showdown there.
3. Anything that would injure the person who the shade resembles would slow it down, and anything that would normally kill the person will cause it to temporarily disappear. The shades will keep reappearing unless they are destroyed with fire, similar to the scarecrows. The monster will retreat after most of its shades are destroyed.
